Newspaper in Education

What is NIE?

NIE is a cooperative effort between Kansas schools and The Wichita Eagle to enhance learning through use of the local daily newspaper in the classroom. NIE offers a variety of exciting programs designed to improve reading, writing and critical thinking skills among elementary, middle and high school students. The integration of newspapers in the classroom allows teachers access to the most current news and information on a variety of topics while supporting academic standards requirements.

When newspapers are incorporated in the school curriculum, students have the opportunity to relate learning to real life situations. Newspapers have often been called the "living textbook" and because the newspaper is perceived as adult oriented reading, it is often more motivational as a teaching tool than the regular textbook. Studies have shown students improve their reading and writing skills as a result of using the newspaper in the classroom.
